Major research interests include 1) the dynamics of land use change in SE-Asia with a focus on changes affecting shifting cultivation and its transformation to other land uses; 2) the effects of decentralizing natural resources management; 3) how decision making on land use at household level is influenced by determinants from different levels; 4) the changing role of N-fixing tree species in agroforestry and other land use systems with a focus on below-ground processes; 5) Studying the sustainability of managing wild plant and animal resources, and their contribution to local livelihoods; 6) adaptation to climate change and climate variability; 7) the changing role of secondary forests as a component of land cover and a resource for local livelihoods; 8) rubber expansion and its impacts; 9) the penology of plants and plant communities under climate change.
